MART 706: Media Production & Distribution
-
What is MART 706?This course is a graduate level media art production course, focusing on portfolio and business development.
-
I can't get in the class! Will you add me?This is a graduate seminar and must remain small. Contact me about adding the course if you are serious.
-
When and where does the class meet? Here is a link to the USC Master Schedule. All up to date info is there.
-
I'm a graduate student in another field. Can I take this?
I will allow any graduate student interested in furthering their development as an independent media maker to take this course. Take care with your graduate advisor to be sure it will work in your program of study. -
What experience should I have to be able to this course? This course is required for the M.A. degree in Media Arts. Because the course focuses on the life of your art in the world and your professional profile as an artist, it's important to have a body of work to showcase and to develop this larger brand/dossier that is "You." This material (films, images, writing, etc) need not be perfect, or even finished, but there has to be something there otherwise the process will be confusing to you.
-
Can I get a jump start on things?
Get a hold of the textbooks and start thinking about your place in the world. -
What are the textbooks for the class?Required:
Warshawski's Shaking the Money Tree, 3rd Edition (do not get earlier editions).
Bresson's Notes on the Cinematographer.
Subscription to DV Magazine.
Subscription to Creative Cow.
(For the subscriptions, if you remember that you are an independent producer that evaluates and specifies a significant amount of equipment for eventual purchase, you will likely get the subscriptions for free.)
Optional/Recommended:
Donaldson's Clearance & Copyright
Bosko's Complete Independent Movie Marketing Handbook
Because this course was added so late, these books will not be in the USC bookstore. I have linked to sources for them, and you can probably find them used or at local bookstore as well (not the Warshawski book, that's brand new.)
